How To Be A Tremendous Person
/Who doesn’t want to be better? A better friend. A better mother, sister, wife. A better daughter, niece, employee? There something in us that makes us want to be better. We are a reflection of a perfect and holy God and as long as we are walking with Him in this life we are always improving. Our character becoming more and more like His.
Today I want to just quickly share something I have been reflecting on lately. What makes a tremendous person tremendous? Tremendous means extremely good or impressive. That’s a huge word nevertheless does someone come to mind when you think of that definition?
Who someone in your life that you think is a tremendous person? What about this person makes them fit this definition in your mind? What is it about this person’s character and behaviors that make them stand out to you?
My theory is they came to your mind because at some point in your relationship with them they made you feel valued. When I think of the people in my life that come to mind when I think of the word tremendous, that is the common theme I see among them. They made me feel important. They served me. When I am with them they seem to be doing the whole “love others as yourself” thing pretty well.
Now every person who came to my mind has faults and has made mistakes and stumbled about. Some of them have made HUGE mistakes. Nevertheless, I know that they love the Lord and I know that they love people and that makes them so magnetic and inspiring to me.
These people are pillars. They make an impact on those around them. They are powerful because they are full of love and kindness. They don't come at you with tons of rules and condemnation. They don’t come to bleed you and your resources dry. Instead, they pour into you. You coming away feeling refreshed and full rather than used and exhausted.
They bring you a coffee without you asking and they invite you to their home for dinner when they know your spouse is out of town. They text you when you don’t show up at church just to let you know that they noticed your absence and want to make sure you are okay. They text you throughout the week just to see how you are or to offer prayer. They are good people. They love well.
So this is my encouragement to you today. I don't know what’s happening in your life at the moment. Maybe everything is great but maybe you’re struggling a little or even a lot. There is power in loving others well. In bearing their burdens. When we put others first our focus shifts and our problems become much smaller and manageable.
These great people we’ve been talking about have problems just like us and they love in spite of them.
Mark 12:30-31 says,
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
Luke 6:31 says,
“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.”
1 Peter 4:8 says,
“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”
Do you want to be tremendous? Do you want to be better? You keep following and clinging to Jesus. Stay in His word and receive His love. Stop focusing on your own problems & look to help others bear theirs. And love others well. Make people feel important. Give them your time and your attention. Think of them. How would you really like to be treated? Treat others that way.
