11 Best Thanksgiving Bible Verses - How To Live Thankful

We love thanksgiving bible verses because the concept of thanksgiving is such a powerful and important one, and it is so much more than just a yearly holiday. Thanksgiving is actually a spiritual discipline that we are told in scripture to cultivate in our lives.

Now I don’t know about you, but when I think about gratitude and thanksgiving, I for sure think about turkey and stuffing and family and going around the table telling what you are most thankful for. Thanksgiving Day and those memories are amazing but they’re only just a taste of true thanksgiving.

As a total lover of all things Thanksgiving Day from the food to the family bonding, let me just assure you that you can actually live in that atmosphere of gratefulness all year long.

Today we will look at some of the best bible verses about thanksgiving and cultivating gratitude in our hearts and lives all year around.

Thanksgiving Is About Praise & Worship!

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:4-5

Seriously go read all of Psalm 100. I love how it paints this picture of thanksgiving being this big parade of gratitude and joy. The imagery of it just makes my heart happy. This verse also gives us several things to be thankful for.

  • He is good!

  • His love is steadfast, and it endures forever!

  • His is faithful!

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, "The Lord reigns!" Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 1 Chronicles 16:31-34

Good is not just something the Father does. Good is actually who He is. He is good. Thanksgiving is a choice. It is a choice we make with grateful hearts in response to the goodness of God.

Because the Father is inherently good, this is a choice we are capable of making at all times regardless of our current circumstances.

Thanksgiving Is About Sacrifice

Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:14-15

I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord. Psalm 116:17

Sometimes thanksgiving is a sacrifice. Sometimes it takes an effort to find something to be grateful for. Gratitude is not always easy and it doesn’t always feel natural. There are times where it will require a conscious decision to be thankful even when our circumstances are hard.

Thanksgiving Is About Remembering

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! Psalm 107:19-22

When thanksgiving is hard to come by verses like this are a great place to turn. This verse is one that calls back to remembrance the faithfulness of the Lord. He is the God of deliverance and healing. His love is steadfast, and He works miracles.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Psalm 28:7

Thanksgiving shifts your focus back to God and His faithfulness. It changes your attitudes by keeping your focus on all that God has done and all that you have and are blessed with.

Ungratefulness only sees what is missing and therefore tends to expect more lack and trouble. Gratitude gives you eyes to see that God is your constant source of strength and your shield. He’s your help.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

Everything you do, you can do in the name of the Lord with a thankful heart.

When you wash the dishes. When you attend church. When you rock the baby back to sleep. When you walk the dog. When you make the presentation. When you go for the promotion. When you choose to be kind to a stranger. When you take care of yourself.

Every little moment matters to Him. He sees them all. He cares about them all. Thanksgiving is a great way to usher His presence into each little moment.

Thanksgiving Is About Prayer

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2

1 Thessalonians tells us to give thanks in ALL circumstances. This can be crazy hard when life is filled with challenging situations. It can also be tough when we are doing great but super distracted by life.

Philippians tells us to combat anxiousness with prayer and the practice of thanksgiving. Gratitude can actually help us fight back against anxiety and fear.

Thanksgiving is a discipline. It is a practice. It is something we continuously work at and improve upon. It requires growing in mindfulness and choosing to see God’s presence in all the little and big moments of our lives.

Thanksgiving Is About Others

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. Ephesians 5:4

We all talk a lot but what are we saying? We tend to think that this verse is just telling us not to say cuss words. It goes so far beyond cuss words. What we talk about matters.

The verse tells us that people need to hear our gratitude.

Thanksgiving is crucial because it can stir your attitude and thought life. It is tough to be thankful and has unforgiveness and bitterness in your heart.

Gratitude reminds you that you were given something that you didn’t deserve. Gratitude reminds you that someone paid the price for your shortcomings and failures. Gratitude reminds you of the grace that was shown to you and as a result, makes you more gracious. Gratitude reminds you of all that you have and in turn shifts your focus away from what you currently lack. Gratitude reminds you of all the times God has come through for you and assures you that He will do it again.
