How To Be Selfless In A Selfie World

It is still crazy to me that the word “selfie” is such a part of our everyday vocabulary. We are living in a selfie world. We have special sticks to help us take them. We have a few incredibly annoying “songs” all about taking them. We have hundreds of apps and filters to make us look better than we really do in them. Most of us have that 4 year old niece or cousin that’s better at taking them than you are. I even saw a celebrity giving a tour of her house and she had a whole section filled with commercial grade lighting and props just for taking her selfies… It’s crazy.

Now I am not against the occasional selfie. I am quite guilty of having more than a couple on my phone. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about the direction our culture continues to head towards. A culture where it is all about focusing on yourself and “you doing you” because you’ve got to take care of yourself first. I am talking about the condition of the majority. A condition that has everyone getting dressed and done up just to take a picture of themselves that they’ll edit the living daylights out of and post online to glorify themselves.

I don’t know where your heart is today, but I don’t want a life that glorifies me because I believe that is a life wasted. I want my life to glorifies One greater than me because that’s where others will find hope. I want to make little of my life because I am so busy making much of Jesus Christ. Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God first and then people second. (Mark 12:30-31) That puts my life in last place. It is so easy to focus on ourselves but we end up missing our purpose which is to love God and then to love and help others.

So let’s talk about how to be selfless in a selfie obsessed world.

Philippians 2:3 - Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Do Nothing From Selfish Ambition or Conceit

It’s that word conceit that jumps out and slaps me. Do nothing from conceit. Conceit is just excessive pride in oneself. It is vanity. Narcissism. It’s making much of yourself. The actual greek word translates to the english word “vainglory.” Vainglory gives impression of emptiness. It’s glory in vain. The problem with conceit or vanity is that it deceives you into thinking that you are more than you are and that you have more than you have. It distracts you from the truth.

In Humility Count Others More Significant Than Yourselves

The verse also says to operate in humility. Humility is the opposite of conceit and vanity. Humility is having a low view of your importance. The verse tells us to esteem others as more important than ourselves. That requires humility. Now maybe the idea of humility leaves a sour taste in your mouth. I understand that. It’s literally the exact opposite of what our culture is pumping into our brains. Humility takes our focus off of ourselves and causes us to look towards God and when your eyes are on Him, you can’t help but see and be moved by the needs of others.

What would our lives look like it we didn’t do ANYTHING from selfish ambition or conceit?! What if everything we did was done in humility. What if all our actions came from an attitude that says, “On my own I am not much, but with the Lord I can move mountains and with that truth I will pour my life out for His people.”

This is my hope. The Bible talks about how there is this wide road that many many people are walking because it’s what’s easy and it leads to destruction. The Bible also says there is a narrow road that not super easy to hike and that few find because few are looking but it’s destination is life.(Matthew 7:13-14) The culture and the majority say “you make the most of your life!” I am telling you, your most will leave you unsatisfied and disappointed. Take the narrow road. Go against the majority. Claim John the Baptist’s attitude when he said “I must decrease so that He may increase.” (John 3:30) Make little of your life and let God make much of it!

I have so much more to say about this topic, which is crazy because overtime I sat down last week to write it I had nothing! My husband pointed me towards Philippians 2 and now I think I'll make this a series! Make sure you join our Living For Love VIP Club to stay in the loop!
