27 Comforting Psalms: Psalms to Comfort the Grieving, Overwhelmed, & Hurting
/The Psalms are packed full of the pure and honest heart cries of people who found themselves in all sorts of circumstances. I love the honesty with which they felt free to approach God.
The vast majority of Psalms came pouring out of a heart wrought with pain and turmoil. Most of them are laments. They are the songs of the people of God crying out to Him in the midst of loss, persecutions, obstacles, trials, and heartaches.
The Psalms are a beautiful haven when life is tough because they remind us of the power found in praise and worship regardless of our distresses. They point us to the comfort found in His presence, even in the midst of pain, when we remember how wonderfully faithful and kind He is.
Today we’re looking at 27 of my favorite Psalms to go to when you need to feel comforted and held. Included is an excerpt of each Psalm but I highly suggest you read each Psalm in its entirety.
I am also putting them in my favorite translation when I want to read and find comfort: The Passion Translation.
So whether you are mourning, or just stressed and overwhelmed, I pray these Psalms bring you great peace & I pray the God of peace would surround you with His presence as you look into His Word. I pray you find comfort and rest for your soul.

God, you are my righteousness, my champion defender. Answer me when I cry for help! Whenever I was in distress, you enlarged me. I’m being squeezed again—I need your kindness right away! Psalm 5:11-12 TPT

He tracks down killers and avenges bloodshed, but he will never forget the ones forgotten by others, hearing every one of their cries for justice. So now, O Lord, don’t forget me. Have mercy on me. Take note of how I’ve been humiliated at the hands of those who hate me. Bring me back again from the brink, from the very gates of death. Save me! I hope these comforting Psalms show you that it is okay to be honest and open with God about the circumstances around you. He promises that He is close by when you are hurting. He tells us your pain hurts Him too. He sees the storm raging and luckily He’s the only one I know that winds and waves obey.
Don’t let your circumstances and trials pull you from God. Instead, press into Him when life is difficult. He is our comforter.
